2nd Lt. Richard Thomas '70, USAFR was lost on February 24, 1972 when his T-38 jet trainer crashed near Reese Air Force Base, Texas. He voluntarily resigned from the Naval Academy on October 4, 1968, which would have been near the beginning of his 2/c year. He was a few weeks from from receiving his wings.
Thomas was son of a Navy officer (class of '39) who was born in San Diego, California. He graduated the Air Force Officer's Training School in March 1971.
He was survived by his wife, Carol; a daughter, Deena; a son, Richard Lee, Jr., who was born six days after his father’s death; and his parents.
